How To Read Your NPS Statement Without Getting Lost In Units And NAV

An NPS statement is not just a balance page. It tells you whether contributions reached the account, how units were allotted, which pension fund and asset allocation are recorded, and whether the retirement account is being maintained with discipline.

Start With The Statement Of Transactions

The Statement of Transactions, or SoT, is the subscriber's account record. It is available through CRA web or mobile login, emailed periodically to the registered email address, and sent physically once a year to the correspondence address recorded with CRA.

Before reading performance, first check whether the basic account details are correct: PRAN, subscriber name, Tier I or Tier II account, registered contact details, nominee information, pension fund and investment choice.

The Five Lines Every Subscriber Should Understand

An NPS statement becomes easier when the subscriber reads it as a chain rather than as isolated numbers.

Statement Item What It Means What To Check
Contribution Money paid by the subscriber, employer or another permitted source. Match it with bank debit, payroll deduction or contribution receipt.
NAV Net asset value used by the pension fund scheme for unit allocation. Remember that NAV changes with market-linked portfolio value.
Units The quantity allotted after contribution processing and NAV application. Confirm that contribution credit has resulted in unit allocation.
Current value The value of units based on the applicable NAV at statement time. Do not treat short-term movement as a final pension outcome.
Asset allocation How the account is allocated across recorded NPS asset classes and choices. Check whether the choice still fits age, risk appetite and retirement horizon.

Why Contributions May Not Appear Immediately

A contribution does not become visible as units the moment money leaves the bank. The process includes receipt or realization by the service provider, upload of contribution details to CRA, fund remittance to the Trustee Bank, transfer to the pension fund, scheme NAV declaration, unit allocation by CRA and then reflection in the subscriber's NPS account.

Subscribers receive SMS and email confirmations for credit of units. If a contribution is missing, compare the date, receipt reference, amount, PRAN and payment route before raising a service query.

Statement Review Checklist

Financial adviser and subscriber reviewing an NPS statement checklist

  1. Check PRAN, name and account type before reading values.
  2. Match recent contributions with bank, payroll or eNPS acknowledgements.
  3. Confirm that units have been credited after processing.
  4. Review pension fund, investment choice and asset allocation.
  5. Check nominee, mobile, email, address and bank details.
  6. Compare current value with long-term retirement goal, not with one-day market movement.
  7. Save the statement with contribution receipts for audit trail and family readiness.

Reading The Statement Like A Control Report

A good NPS statement review is partly financial and partly operational.

Review Area Possible Signal Practical Response
Contribution pattern Long gaps may show that retirement saving discipline has broken. Restart a direct or payroll contribution routine.
Unit credit Payment receipt exists but units are not visible after processing time. Check receipt details and raise a service query through the correct channel.
Asset allocation Recorded choice may no longer match age or risk tolerance. Review allocation calmly instead of reacting to short-term returns.
Contact and nominee details Outdated records can delay alerts, service requests or family claims. Update details and keep family records current.

Why Statement Discipline Matters At Scale

India's pension ecosystem is now large and increasingly digital. PIB reported that, as on March 31, 2026, NPS had over 2.17 crore subscribers, APY had 8.96 crore enrolments, and combined NPS/APY assets under management stood at Rs. 15.95 lakh crore.

Those figures are not a return promise. They show why statement review, unit-credit reconciliation and correct records matter for every subscriber.

FAQs

Where can I access my NPS statement?

Subscribers can access the Statement of Transactions online through CRA login, including web and mobile access. It is also emailed periodically and sent physically once a year to the recorded correspondence address.

Why do I see units instead of only rupees?

NPS contributions are invested through pension fund schemes. After processing, units are allotted based on the scheme NAV, and the statement reflects both units and value.

Does a fall in current value mean NPS has failed?

No. NPS is market-linked. Short-term value changes should be reviewed in the context of asset allocation, contribution discipline, age and retirement horizon.

What should I do if a contribution is missing?

First match the statement with bank debit, payroll record or contribution acknowledgement. If the contribution still does not reflect after normal processing, raise a query through the CRA, PoP, employer or applicable service channel.
