Documents Required for NPS Registration: Keep These Ready Before You Start
NPS registration is usually a straightforward process, but many applications slow down because basic KYC, bank, contact or nominee details are not ready in the same format as official records. A short document check before starting can reduce rework and help families complete the retirement-account setup with better confidence.

PFRDA's public milestone data shows the scale at which pension onboarding is now operating in India: as of 28 June 2026, NPS had 2.25 crore subscribers and assets under management of Rs 17,22,139 crore. At this scale, clean onboarding information matters because every mismatch in name, address, bank or nomination details can create avoidable follow-up.

The readiness map above compares practical document groups, not an official fixed document count. Resident applicants should normally prepare five core groups. NRI and OCI applicants should prepare the same core groups plus additional residency, passport or OCI and tax-residency information, depending on the route used and the applicable KYC checks.
Keep These Document Groups Ready
| Document area | Why it matters | Readiness checks |
|---|---|---|
| Identity and PAN | NPS registration is KYC-based, and identity details should match the official records used for onboarding. | Keep PAN, Aadhaar or other KYC identity details ready as applicable. Check spelling, date of birth and name order before submission. |
| Address proof | Address details support KYC, communication and account records. | Keep current and permanent address information aligned with accepted KYC proof. NRI and OCI applicants should also keep overseas and Indian address details ready where applicable. |
| Bank account proof | Bank details support contribution, refund and exit-payment processing. | Keep cancelled cheque, passbook or account statement details ready if required by the chosen route. Confirm name, account number and IFSC before upload or form submission. |
| Photo, signature and contact details | Some registration routes require photo and signature records, while mobile and email support account access and OTP-based steps. | Use a clear recent photo and clear signature image where required. Keep active mobile number and email ID accessible during the process. |
| Nominee and family details | Nomination improves claim readiness and helps avoid family-level ambiguity later. | Keep nominee name, relationship, date of birth and guardian details for a minor nominee ready before starting. |
| NRI, OCI and tax-residency declarations | Non-resident and OCI registrations may involve additional eligibility, address, passport, OCI and tax-residency checks. | Keep passport, OCI details, overseas address, Indian address, bank route information and FATCA or CRS-related details ready as applicable. |

The desk setup above shows a practical onboarding review: identity, address, bank, contact and nominee inputs are checked before form submission so that the applicant does not discover mismatches after starting the registration flow.
Mistakes That Commonly Delay NPS Registration
The most common issue is a name mismatch between PAN, Aadhaar, bank records and the registration form. Even small differences in initials, spelling, spaces or changed surnames can require correction.
Another frequent delay comes from using an inactive mobile number or email ID. Online registration and account access can depend on OTP and communication triggers, so the applicant should use contact details that are currently accessible.
Bank details should also be checked carefully. The applicant's name, account number and IFSC should be verified from the actual bank record, not typed from memory.
Nomination should not be treated as a last-minute field. Keep nominee information ready, especially where a nominee is a minor and guardian details may be required.
Online Registration Or Assisted PoP Support
Official NPS registration can be initiated through online and Point of Presence routes. The exact document flow can differ by residential status, CRA route, KYC mode and account-opening channel. For a resident applicant, the usual practical preparation is identity, PAN, address, bank, photo, signature, contact and nominee readiness. For an NRI or OCI applicant, additional residency and tax-residency checks may apply.
