NPS Death Claim Readiness: A Family Checklist for Nomination and Records

No family wants to search for a PRAN, a nomination record or an old contact detail during a difficult time. A small annual NPS record review can make the claim route easier to understand and trace if it is ever needed.

What happens to an NPS account after a subscriber’s death?

For an All Citizen Model subscriber, death is an exit event. The nominee or legal heir can submit the claim-settlement application with the required documents to the associated Point of Presence (PoP). The current PFRDA FAQs say the nominee or legal heir may withdraw the accumulated pension wealth; they may also choose an annuity where applicable.

The right route depends on the subscriber’s sector and the particular account. Do not assume that a screenshot, a remembered password or an informal message is enough. The associated PoP and official NPS channels can confirm the current claim form and supporting-document list for the case.

Four records to organise now

RecordWhy it mattersSimple check
NominationIt identifies who should receive the claim benefit under the applicable NPS rules.Review the nominee name, relationship, date of birth and contact details after a major family change.
PRAN and account routeA family member needs to identify the correct NPS record and associated service channel.Keep the PRAN and a note of the associated PoP or employer/nodal-office route in a secure family record.
Identity and claim evidenceThe exact document set varies by the claim, nominee status and sector.Keep documents current and obtain the current checklist from the official channel before submission.
Contact and bank detailsOut-of-date records can complicate account communication and verification.Review the subscriber’s registered mobile number, email and bank details in the official account record.

A practical family-readiness map

Four-stage NPS family claim-readiness map. The horizontal axis is the claim-readiness journey and the vertical axis is record readiness. Stages are review nomination, build evidence pack, submit through the associated Point of Presence, and track and retain the response.

The chart is a preparation map, not a measure of claim approval or settlement time. It moves from a nomination review to an organised evidence pack, then to submission through the associated PoP and retention of claim references. The vertical axis shows record readiness: the later stages depend on clearer, retrievable records. The practical inference is that nomination and account housekeeping are useful before a family needs to make a claim.

Keep the family record useful, not exposed

  • Keep a concise, secure note of the PRAN, associated service route and where original documents are held. Do not circulate passwords, OTPs or full login credentials.
  • Tell the nominee that an NPS account exists. That is different from sharing access credentials.
  • Recheck nomination after marriage, divorce, a birth, a death or any other material change in the family.
  • If there is no valid nomination, legal-heir or succession documentation may be relevant. Ask the associated PoP or official NPS channel for the current claim requirements before collecting or submitting documents.
  • Retain acknowledgement and reference numbers after any request. A record of what was submitted and when is more useful than relying on memory.

FAQs

Can a nominee simply withdraw the NPS corpus after the subscriber’s death?

The applicable PFRDA FAQ for the All Citizen Model says the nominee or legal heir may withdraw the accumulated pension wealth after following the claim process. It also notes that an annuity may be chosen where applicable. The sector, account and current rules matter, so verify the route for the particular subscriber.

What if the subscriber did not register a valid nomination?

PFRDA’s All Citizen exit FAQ says that, where there is no valid nomination, payment is made to family members on the basis of the legal-heir certificate issued by the competent State authority or a succession certificate from a court of competent jurisdiction. Obtain current procedural guidance before acting.

Should a family keep the NPS password in a document folder?

No. Store account-location information securely, but do not share passwords or OTPs. Use official account-recovery and service channels when required.
